Summary

Many American schools across the nation have turned to recruiting highly qualified teachers from abroad to work in hard-to-staff schools. In order for teachers new to the American public school culture from abroad to be successful, they must be equipped with strategies to use in order to enhance their cultural awareness and self-efficacy in the classroom and provided with a myriad of wrap-around support systems that meet their pedagogical, social and emotional needs.

  • Develop an understanding of American culture in order to gain a deeper perspective of customs,values, and traditions.

 

  • Develop an understanding of culturally responsive teaching strategies to effectively promote diversity in the classroom.

 

  • Establish classroom management strategies and techniques that will mitigate classroom disruptions.

 

  • Learn various teaching methodologies in order to differentiate instruction for diverse learners.

 

  • Build a toolkit of pedagogical best practices that will enhance teaching and learning.

 

  • Master communication strategies and techniques to use with students and parents to form relationships.

Now more than ever teacher leaders must keep a pulse on student learning and implement effective engagement strategies in order to ensure that students do not fall through the invisible cracks of time during a 60 or 90-minute class block.
